Making invisible things visible
My art projects involve locals and non-art audiences after a thorough study
of their habits and environment. The research investigates a mechanism of
society. I am especially interested in constituting elements of particular
networks and making them visible through experimental art projects. For each
project, a unique item (teabags, beans, potatoes, bed-sheets, etc.) is chosen
as a catalyst to be used in interactions.
Most of the time, the aim of this interaction is not explained to participants
in the beginning. Their acceptance of conditions or their doubts often form
a tension between participants and me.
Since 2001, I have involved 50 to 60 participants in each city I worked in.
I became more and more interested in people's fundamental capacity to accept
floating goals and projects with un-suggested endings. I often felt that some
unexpected and authentic action could happen during a long period. Contrary
to many people's belief, we carry abilities to build a new kind of hidden
network. An invisible community surrounding us can materialize in an unexpected
way.
In the Chantier public project, I would like to trust my frequency to receive
people's communication behaviors and through an experimental project, people
will realize "potato" becomes "gold" in the end.
